The 6029 Project

Progress reports

Reports and photographs of the restoration of 6029 will be published as they become available, to show the progress of this project. See progress pictures.

October 2008 -

6029's old boiler has been lifted from the loco frame, thanks to a heavy crane and expert preparation, and testing of the new boiler has begun. Warm water tests are underway prior to steam testing.

See progress picture.

August 2008 -

Current work is focused on removing the loco's ash pan, and finalizing preparation of the new boiler for its first hydrostatic test. Grime removal from the loco generally continues using a high-pressure water spray.

Work also continues at Eveleigh workshops in Sydney on restoration of the cab, and preparations are beginning for the return of the mobile crane to lift the old boiler off the frame.

March 2008 -

There is some work for everyone on this project - we are currently preparing the smokebox and ash pan to facilitate removal of the faulty boiler from the frames (and would really like to do this before Canberra’s winter arrives!) and at the same time preparing the new boiler for inspection.

Again the hope is to have the wash-out part of this work done before winter.

Project leader Alan Gardner believes it would be good to re-line the cab roof with timber so he is appealing to supporters for a quantity of suitable timber, such as Jarrah.

On the last work day, Alan, Trevor Boreham and John Cheeseman did some work to begin rust removal and other repairs to the cab, which has now joined the tanks on the ground at the work site.

Negotiations are underway to have the tanks taken away for repair, which would obviously be a big help to our volunteer work force.

As always, donations are welcome, as the team is now saving to get a mobile crane back to lift the old boiler out of the frame.

See progress pictures.

December 2007, future work plan -

Future work days will focus on the strip-down of the boiler as follows:

In parallel to the above, the change-over boiler will be internally inspected by the contract boiler inspector. Any recommended repair work will be carried out and the boiler will then be sealed for hydrostatic test.

At this stage all boiler mounting surfaces will be renewed/repaired as required. All boiler studs and bolts will be replaced new with STD carbon (CS 1020) specs as per AS 1228.

After the successful hydrostatic test as per AS 3788, all overhauled steam fittings will be secured to the boiler in preparation for the steam test. The smoke stack and injectors from 6029 will have to be temporarily fitted to the boiler to facilitate this test.

November 2007 summary of progress -

Mobile crane and a heavy equipment float had moved the "spare" boiler from near the yard entrance to the worksite.

Front and rear tanks removed; many boiler and cab fittings removed, labelled and stored; about half the rocking grates are out; and many "loose" parts at various places in the yard have been identified, marked with yellow paint and will be relocated to the worksite as soon as possible. Other parts stored in various vehicles will also be eventually relocated to the work site.
