3016 Progress

By Max Fish

3016

Work has started on removing the regulator and main steam pipe elbow from the boiler dome.

This is to check the condition of both parts.

The steam pipe elbow of another 30 class fractured in service, so it was thought wise to check this part while our loco is out of service.

Drilling out of broken wall stays has commenced.

There are only a few of these fortunately, and they are ones comparatively easy to get at.

The big job of replacing the smokebox tubeplate rivets is yet to start.

Opportunity of the Millenium

Cooma Mail to run once more

By Doug Smith

Saturday, 1 January 2000, Kingston

March will see an historic recreation of the Cooma Mail train.

The Australian Railway Historical Society announced today that it intends to recreate the nostalgia of a by-gone millenium by running a steam-hauled overnight mail train.

On Friday, March 24, the train will leave Sydney Terminal behind historic steam locomotive 3801.

7315 Progress

7315

The trial trips of this loco have been quite successful.

The initial overheating was traced to a sticking valve in the hydraulic circuit for the cooling fan. Once the valve was bypassed, the fan worked well enough.

The fan unit has worn bearings though, and steps are being taken to get a replacement unit.

The diesel engine appears to be in better condition than that of 7319 before its rebuild.

Work will now proceed on the few details required to bring the locomotive to full accreditation standard.

A much needed repaint is also proposed.
