Pay Bus hits the Trail on a Trial
By Max Fish
After years of being one of our 'wannabees', pay bus FP 11 slipped the Museum's fences and escaped on a trial trip to Royalla early on Saturday morning, September 4.
Karl Maftoum has been the project leader for a number of years.
He, with partner in crime Alan Ward, arranged the gaol bust following a successful inspection by the Department of Transport approving FP 11 for use as a track vehicle (click on picture to see larger image).
Talk about our 'Hairy Legs' (aka track workers) living in style — this thing comes with air conditioning and a fridge!
I suppose our new track performance criterion is the number of dogspikes driven per can of Solo!
Change that 'wannabee' to Winnebago.
I happened to be at the Museum when an air horn blast advertised that this was not the Canberra Xplorer service approaching the Canberra first home signal.
My camera caught FP 11 traversing Canbera yard and some very happy people following the successful trial trip (click on this picture to see a larger image).

Pay Bus hits the Trail on a Trial
Continued from column 1
Only one or two minor oil weeps were revealed - not bad after years of sitting around with no long distance moves.
Well done Karl, Lindsay Richmond, David Malcolm, Greg Grantham and many others who undid vandal attention to produce another operating vehicle (click on picture to see larger image).
For the record: FP 11 is a former NSWGR pay bus which came to the Museum in 1995. It is on loan from the Holbrook and Germanton Railway Preservation Society.
