Parcels Trailer ATP 1000

Parcels trailer ATP 1000 was one of two prototypes (coded ETP) built using innovative methods in 1968 to provide a van for parcel and light freight traffic and accommodation for a guard.

Using thick plywood for the walls and roof meant a saving of more than 20% in the weight of each vehicle. At the time, the plywood panels were thought to be the largest single sheets of plywood ever made.

It had a centrally-located guard's compartment, and two parcel / freight compartments either side, accessible through sliding doors.

Typically, these cars would leave Sydney on an overnight mail train and then be attached to a connecting diesel rail car service for the trip to their final destination.

ATP 1000 was withdrawn from revenue service in June 1989 and stored at Parkes until coming to Canberra in 2002.
