Diesel-electric Locomotive D25

Diesel-electric locomotive D25 is a Bo-Bo (two twin-axle bogies) 400hp locomotive, built by The English Electric Co. at its Rocklea, Queensland plant in 1958.

The locomotive was one of seven 60-ton shunters built in 1957-58 for operations at the Australian Iron and Steel (AIS) steelworks at Port Kembla.

It was bought by the Society in 1990, ending a long search for a suitable engine for yard work.

Prior to its purchase, D25 and others of its class had been decommissioned.

It had been destined for export to Vietnam as scrap metal, but after its purchase, it was moved to Canberra and restored to working order.

Today, D25 is used as the yard shunter at Canberra Railway Museum at Kingston. It assembles carriages for the Society's tour trains, or moves passenger or freight rolling stock for display or repair in the Canberra Railway Museum yard and workshop.
