DAM 2333 Sleeping Car

DAM 2333 air-conditioned sleeping cars are bogie stainless steel cars originally built for the New South Wales and Victorian Railways to operate Sydney-Melbourne express passenger services.

The DAM is similar to the NAM class twinette sleeping car but has 9 two-berth compartments. Each compartment has en-suite facilities - wash basin, shower and toilet - while the centre compartment is the size of two normal compartments and provides a more open travelling space with a fixed double bed and a bunk. The car also has accommodation for a conductor.

DAM 2333 was built in 1961 for the Southern Aurora service, as part of the NSW and VR joint stock.

It was part of the final run of the Southern Aurora service and the first Sydney Express in August 1986.

When locomotive-hauled passenger trains ceased running, it went into ownership of the Victorian Railways. At some stage it was damaged by fire and subsequently passed into the ownership of SteamRail Victoria.

It was transferred into the care of the Society in August 2007, and in December 2007 it was transferred to Canberra for restoration.
