Suzuki Sierra Hi-Rail Vehicle

The Suzuki Sierra rail inspection/maintenance vehicle was built to operate on either road or rail.

The vehicle has been restored to operational condition and is used by track maintenance crews working on the Michelago Tourist Railway, which runs south from Queanbeyan.

The vehicle is fitted with both road tyres and rail wheels, allowing it to be used on road or rail. Work crews usually move the vehicle on or off rail tracks at level crossings or at selected track sections where there is level ground on both sides of the track.

When required for rail running, steel wheels are lowered to the same depth as the road wheels, with all eight wheels sitting on the rails. Propulsion is provided through the road wheels but the steel rail wheels keep the vehicle on the track.
