HN 2198 was originally built for the NSW Railways in 1939 in a HFN configuration with open saloon seating and guard's accommodation.
Originally, it had five-abreast seating, but in 1970 - as part of the conversion to HN class - the seating capacity was changed to four-abreast, reducing the seating capacity to 52. At the same time, the wall panelling was upgraded.
HN 2198 was used on the Southern Highlands Express until withdrawn in 1989 and purchased by the Society. Tables have been installed between each set of four seats.
This car one of the most useful cars in the Society's fleet. It has a seating capacity higher than any other saloon car, and is used on dinner / dance trains and picnic trains.
It is also one of the few passenger cars with guard's accommodation, so it is constantly used as a terminal (end) car.
The car received a major face-lift during 1996, and together with the SCN class cars, the open saloon accommodation is popular with groups.
The second photo on the right was taken on 12 July 2003 following a repaint, including clear finish. |
