Louvre Van JLX 33820

JLX 33820 is a bogie louvre van built by Tulloch Ltd. in 1969 and used to carry general freight around the NSW rail system and inter-state.

It was one of 135 JLX wagons built - the longest and highest of all the NSW Railway's louvre vans. It could accommodate a fork lift with full pallet inside for loading.

Their weight was just over 26 tons, and they could carry a further 47 tons, making them valuable freight wagons for the NSW system.

They were the first vans in Australia to include drawgear specially-designed to minimise the shock of impacts (for example, when being shunted) so that the risk of damage to freight was minimised.

Their value was indicated by 15 of their class being included in the first east-west Sydney to Perth standard gauge freight train in 1970.

JLX 33820 was acquired by the Society in 1999 and is currently used as a storage van.
