L Class Water Tankers
L class water tankers (formerly BE wagons) are bogie vehicles built in the early 1900s and used to transport water to NSW locations.
The Society's collection comprises:
- L 630, ex-BE wagon, acquired 1999
- L 1166, ex-BE 521, built 1915, acquired 1999
- L 1168, ex-BE 19015, built 1913, acquired 1982
- L 1175, ex-BE 20771, built 1917, acquired 1999
- L 1176, ex-BE 20706, built 1917, acquired 1999
- L 1179, ex-BE 4017, built 1917, acquired 1983
These "water gins" were originally flat cars, often strengthened in the early years of the Second World War to transport military equipment.
Later they had tanks fitted so they could ferry water to outlying NSW centres such as Menindee and Ivanhoe.
In more recent times, the Society has placed them at locations on the Michelago Tourist Railway so that local fire brigades can access their water during any fire emergency. |
