MCE 540 Passenger Car
MCE 540 is a wooden passenger car built in 1929 by Clyde Engineering for service on NSW country trains.
It originally was a composite saloon / compartment MCX car, one of 29 built.
Between 1949 and 1952, some 19 were converted to all-compartment MCE format, increasing the number of compartments from 6 to 9.
Total seating is for 18 first class passengers and 48 in economy, once a common combination for mail trains.
Originally the car had external varnished cedar panelling and crownlight windows. In the 1970s, it received new external sheeting and then - in mid-1984 - was repainted in the 'candy' colour scheme of the NSWGR.
It was acquired by the Society in 1986 and today is a static exhibit at Canberra Railway Museum.Click on picture for larger image; use your 'Back' button to return to this page
