NAM Class Sleeping Cars

NAM 2335, 2374, 2341

NAM air-conditioned sleeping cars are bogie stainless steel cars originally built for the New South Wales and Victorian Railways to operate Sydney-Melbourne express passenger services.

The NAMs at Canberra Railway Museum have 10 two-berth compartments and are known as twinette cars. Each compartment has en-suite facilities - wash basin, shower and toilet. The cars also have accommodation for a conductor.

NAM 2335 was built in September 1961 as the first of this type for the Southern Aurora service, as part of the NSW and VR joint stock. (Earlier, six had been built for the Sydney-Brisbane service).

The interior has been modernised through the replacement of vinyl by laminex.

NAM 2335 was part of the final run of the then-called Sydney Express, which departed Melbourne on 21 November 1993.

It was purchased at auction in August 1994, and after overhaul entered service with ARHS in July 1995.

NAM 2374 entered service with the NSWGR and VR in January 1971 as part of Victoria's contribution to the joint stock pool of cars for the Southern Aurora.

It was built as part of a batch of cars required to replace several destroyed in a major accident at Violet Town, Victoria, in 1969.

Its last revenue trip in joint stock service was from Melbourne to Sydney on the night of 27 January 1992. It was purchased at auction in August 1994, and after overhaul, re-entered service in April 1995.

It retains its original vinyl interior panelling, and is the youngest vehicle in the Society's fleet.

In 2004, the Society bought a third NAM car - NAM 2341 - from a Victorian preservation group. It was built in 1961 and was in regular service until 1994.

Renovation work has been carried out on this car and it had its first revenue run in April 2006.

The Society's NAM cars are used along with other sleeping cars on the Society's long-distance tours trains where sleeping accommodation is required.
