Saloon Sitting Car SCN 1740

SCN 1740 was built in 1939, as BN 2202. It was refurbished in 1970 and included in a set which formed the Southern Highlands Express, running between Sydney and Goulburn.

It carried name boards with the train's name and became well-known when in 1973 this car was removed from the set and included in the consist of the Tenterfield Mail. After the Sydney Morning Herald noted that the Southern Highlands Express had been observed at Werris Creek, the name boards were quickly removed!

In 1975 the car transferred to inter-urban working from Sydney, serving Newcastle, Gosford and Katoomba, before returning to the Goulburn route.

It was withdrawn and sold to the Society in 1989.

As with RFN 1739 (formerly SCN 1739), the car has two saloons, the first with 32 seats arranged in club style, four to a table.

However, SCN 1740 retains a further 12 seats in the second saloon - two sets of four to a table, and two sets of two to a table. The second saloon has been upgraded by the Society, and overall the carriage offers excellent accommodation for 44 passengers.

Like RFN 1739, it is gas heated.
