Economy Class Sitting Car SFS 2277

SFS 2277 is an air-conditioned economy class sitting car, built by Commonwealth Engineering in 1951.

The all-steel car entered service in May 1951 in RUB set 144. The car saw service on the Brisbane Limited, the North Coast Daylight Express, the Riverina Express and the Intercapital Daylight. The car has vestibules and toilets at both ends.

The car has seating for 49 passengers arranged 2+2 in an open saloon, plus a single compartment which seats 8 passengers. The car remained in this configuration for the whole of its service life.

In July 1982, following an overhaul at Eveleigh carriage works in Sydney, the car became the first vehicle to be painted in the then-new "candy" colour scheme of red, orange and white.

It was withdrawn from service in 1994 and placed in storage at Goulburn on 16 December 1995. At some stage, the carriage suffered fire damage while in storage.

The Society purchased the car in November 1999 and uses it as a source of spare parts for other passenger cars.
