Diesel Engine X 203

Designed and built by the Railway's Water Supply Workshops at Chullora between 1963 and 1966, the X 200s were used for shunting trains at country and city depots.

The one exception to these duties was at the Yass Tramway, where X 202 was the line's sole locomotive from 1964, replacing the 13 Class steam engines from 1964 to 1972.

Their construction used a number of surplus steam engine components, including the wheel sets which came from the giant 60 Class Garratts (an example of which can be seen at the Society's Canberra Railway Museum).

With an axle load of 15 tons, the X 200s were quite harsh on the tramway's light track.

X 202 was scrapped in 1989 and when X 203 came up for tender in 1992, the Society purchased it with financial assistance from Canberra Cycles of Fyshwick.

It can be seen at Yass Railway Museum, as part of the Yass heritage display.
