Steam Train Trips from Canberra

Canberra steam locomotive 3016

The ARHS (ACT) operates excursion trains from Canberra/Queanbeyan south to Tuggeranong, the Melrose Valley and Royalla, and north to Bungendore.

In the summer fire season, or when our steam locomotives are out of service, these trains are hauled by restored diesel locomotives.

But once the fire danger period is over, these trains - subject to locomotive availability - are usually headed by a steam locomotive restored by Society members.

The most famous is steam locomotive is known simply as 1210, built in 1878 and which - in 1914 - hauled the first train into Canberra.

Our other veteran is 3016 - she was built in 1903 and in 2007 was restored to service to haul our heritage trains.

Please enquire at the Society's Tours Office if you want to join a train hauled by a steam locomotive - generally, this will be between April and September, outside of the fire season.
